Equipment commonly used in Paranormal Research

There are some basic pieces of equipment that every paranormal investigator should have.  The following items make up a basic ghost hunter's kit:

1: Camera-     Digital cameras are widely used, though there is some dispute as to the ability to validate the evidence without a negative.  I recommend using a digital camera if your budget is limited like ours, so you don't have to worry about buying film and developing it.  Other cameras can also be used.  There has been much success using 35mm and 110 cameras and also Polaroid.  I personally use a Kodak Easyshare c813 8.2 megapixel digital camera and have had much success with it.  We also use a Vivitar Vivicam 5386 5.0 megapixel still digital camera but we have learned that we get far better results with the higher megapixel camera.

2: Flashlight-     This doesn't need much explanation.  I recommend using a camera that has a red lens.  This enables you to use it without destroying your ability to see at night.  I have tried it myself, and it definitely helps.  I prefer Maglight as they can fit in your camera case or pocket and are virtually indestructible.

3: Notebook-     You should use a notebook to keep track of weather conditions, solar weather, date, and time.  In addition, you should keep a record of any unusual experiences.

4: Recorder-     Recorders are used in order to capture electronic voice phenomena (EVP).  There are two type of recorders, analog, which uses a cassette, and digital, which does not use a cassette.  When using an analog recorder, make sure that it has an external microphone in order to cut down on recording noise from internal mechanisms.  The group currently owns and uses 2 RCA RP5120-A digital recorders.

The following items can be added to your kit to enhance the amount of information collected:

1: EMF Detector-     There are many types ranging in price, including a kit explaining how to make your own.  These devices measure electromagnetic field fluctuations. Many teams use the Gauss Master EMF detector as it is inexpensive.  NEARPS at present uses the Cell Sensor EMF detector and the MEL-8704 EMF/Temperature detector.

2: Camcorder-     Video recorders can be used to document an investigation.  In addition, it can also video tape moving orbs and anomalies.  Camcorders equipped with night vision are a must, in most cases.  We use a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD308 mini dvd camcorder.  The mini DVDs are much more affordable than mini DV tapes.

3: Infra Red Light-     This is in addition to the camcorder.  This attachment adds extra night vision range up to about 60 meters.  We use a Sony HVL-HIRC which attaches to the Active Interface Shoe on the top of the camera.

4: Thermal Scanner-     This device measures ambient air temperature and can indicate a decrease or increase in air temperature.  Perfect for detecting cold spots.  NEARPS uses the MEL-8704 meter listed above since it detects temperature as well as EMF in one handheld device.

5: Night Vision-     Used in the same way a camcorder with infra red light is used.  Orbs can be seen with night vision goggles.

6: Motion Detector-      This device uses infra red to detect temperature changes and also uses detector to measure shock waves and physical movement within a certain range.

7: Ion Meter-     can measure positive and negative ion energy.  When spirit energy is near, the meter measures high disturbance.

8: Geiger Counter-     Has been used in ghost investigations successfully since the 1970's
